HIC Minutes for Meeting 28 September 19, 2006

Attendees: Dave Humphreys, Rev. Marilyn Meeker-Williams, Jim McClain, Colleen Teeuwe, Diana and Roger VanDuzer, Jo Ann Schulman, James Chappell, and Ana Cummings.

Dave Humphreys chaired the meeting which was held at St. Mark's. Rev. Marilyn Meeker-Williams offered an opening prayer.

Discussion followed with a brief review of the organization's history, this being the 28th meeting of the coalition.

Then discussion followed on the community service on Thanksgiving Monday with the suggestion that we provide a light supper, i.e. soup, sandwiches, slice of pie, and drink with a love offering for the Heights Meals on Wheels (MoW) program. Colleen offered to lead the organization of providing the light supper, including getting the cooking done. Don Carlson is taking the lead on the service itself. We need to get information right away where and when the service will be so that we can advertise early. Also, the idea of involving youth was discussed. The meal would probably start at 5:30 and end at 6:45 p.m to prepare for the 7 PM service. Colleen to check on location.

Colleen offered, if we incorporate, to help write grants for the MoW program. Several offered ideas of possible donations, including the possibility of St. Mark's Mission committee. We discussed possible places where the MoW could be located. Heights House Section 8 housing, Heights Tower, and Independence Heights at Whitby and Main are locations with possible clients. We discussed the need for a coordinator and an administrator to sign up clients and get the information necessary. May get an administrator possibly to work on a volunteer basis, but a coordinator would probably need to be employed who could be located in a building close to the facility. Diana and David to work on the coordinator job description.

The application for incorporation was discussed. Also discussed was the application for pro bono legal services and the need for certain information so we can complete the application. Dave will help Ana and maybe Marilyn can help.

Community sing-along was discussed. We decided to let it go for another time because there is too much going on with each church.

Historic Heights tour in March would perhaps be a better time. Will try to organize event. Dave will try to contact the Heights Homeowners Association to see if they can assist or lend ideas.
Next meeting will be 3rd Tue of October (17th) from 6:30 to 8:00 PM at St. Andrew's House, 1819 Heights Blvd next to St. Andrew's church. We have decided to skip November and December meetings and reconvene in January.
Closing prayer by Roger VanDuzer.

Respectfully, Ana Cummings
